FIRING OUTDOORS
Firing outdoors encompasses everything beyond the electric kiln, and embodies a
need to be directly involved in each stage of making a pot. Adeles first experience of
firing in anything other than an electric kiln was Raku firing at Jess Jos’s studio. The
raw elemental nature of working with flame to transform the pots captured her
imagination. Shes returned 3 times to work with master potter Aisha Tabbiz to learn
traditional pit firing in Morocco. Learnt wood firing at the Oxford University Kilns site
with Brigit Connolly, Jim Gladwin and Robin Wilson, and experimented with various
ways of pit firing, smoke firing, disposable saggars, paper and clay kilns, and obvara,
all on week long trips with Clay Time .Adele takes a curious approach to
understanding these more traditional ways of firing. The more you learn, the more
you understand there is to learn and discovering techniques deepens the
understanding of any firing process
